EDM Drilling
When 'standard' drilling is not an option
In modern manufacturing, increasingly high demands are placed on precision, material selection, and reproducibility. Traditional machining techniques such as conventional drilling can sometimes fall short—especially when dealing with extremely hard materials, very small diameters, or deep holes requiring high accuracy. In these situations, EDM drilling (Electrical Discharge Machining) offers a reliable and efficient alternative.
What is EDM Drilling?
EDM drilling is a specialized EDM technique in which material is removed by means of controlled electrical discharges between an electrode and the workpiece. This process takes place in a dielectric fluid and without any mechanical contact. Instead of cutting forces, the material is locally vaporized or melted by the spark discharge. This makes it possible to create holes in materials that are difficult or nearly impossible to machine using conventional methods.
Applications: micro holes and deep drilling
One of the greatest advantages of EDM drilling is its ability to produce very small and deep holes with a high aspect ratio. Typical applications include micro holes for cooling channels, start holes for wire EDM, nozzles, medical components, and precision parts in the aerospace industry. Hole diameters can range from a few tenths of a millimeter to several millimeters, while maintaining excellent hole quality and positioning accuracy. This makes the technique particularly suitable for applications where precision is critical.
Suitable for hard and exotic materials
EDM drilling is ideally suited for machining hardened steel, carbide, titanium, Inconel, and other exotic alloys. Since material hardness has no influence on the process, machinability remains constant regardless of the material selected. This makes EDM drilling especially attractive for applications where strength, wear resistance, and heat resistance are essential, and where conventional machining methods quickly reach their limits.
Minimal thermal load and deformation
Although the process is based on heat, the thermal load is highly localized and controlled. As a result, the rest of the workpiece remains unaffected and deformation is minimized. No mechanical stresses caused by cutting forces are introduced, which benefits dimensional accuracy and structural integrity. This is particularly important for precision components and complex geometries.
