What is Wire EDM?
Wire EDM is a machining process in which a thin, continuously moving, electrically charged wire is used to remove material from electrically conductive workpieces. Through controlled electrical discharges between the wire and the workpiece, material is locally melted and removed without any mechanical contact. The process takes place in a dielectric fluid, ensuring stability and precise material removal.
Complex contours and fine details
A key advantage of wire EDM is the ability to produce highly complex contours and fine details. Straight cuts, sharp internal corners, small radii, and intricate 2D and 3D profiles can be machined with great accuracy. This makes wire EDM particularly suitable for the production of mold components, precision inserts, punches, and functional parts with demanding geometric requirements.
Machining hard and high-performance materials
Wire EDM is especially effective for machining hard materials such as tool steel, carbide, hardened alloys, and other wear-resistant materials. Since material hardness has no influence on the process, machinability remains consistent. In addition, no mechanical stresses are introduced into the workpiece, which is essential for components that must remain dimensionally accurate and structurally stable.
Excellent surface quality
One of the greatest strengths of wire EDM is the exceptional surface quality that can be achieved. Thanks to optimized cutting strategies and multiple finishing passes, very low surface roughness values can be attained. This reduces the need for additional finishing operations such as grinding or polishing, and in many cases eliminates them entirely. The result is a more efficient production process and shorter lead times.
